Yersin, Alexandre
(1863-1943)
   microbiologist
   of swiss origin, Alexandre Yersin was born in Lavaux, switzerland, and in 1886 joined the Pasteur Institute and worked with émile roux on research on diphtheria toxins. He is recognized as the discoverer of the specific plague bacillus that infected Hong Kong (1894), the Yersin and Kitasato bacillus (named also for the Japenese physician who discovered it at the same time). Yersin also authored several geographic works dealing with the coast of Annam, which he explored during his travels.
